Visiting Professorship
The late Professor Geoffrey Donald Thorburn, BSc (Med), MD BS, FRACP, FAA, AO, had a long and illustrious career as a research scientist primarily working in the area of fetal physiology. He is recognised both nationally and internationally as one of the founders of contemporary fetal physiology, and the growth and development of this scientific discipline is due in no small part to his pioneering work in the 1960's and his continuing contributions over the subsequent three decades. It is primarily through his efforts that the study of fetal physiology has been advanced at an institutional level, and specifically by the establishment of the Australian Perinatal Society, of which he was the inaugural President. In 1997, in honour and recognition of the contributions made to the Society by him, the Society's Visiting Professor Program was renamed "The Professor Geoffrey Thorburn Visiting Professorship".
This year, the Visiting Professorship has been awarded to Dr. Donna M. Ferriero, Chief of Child Neurology at UCSF Children's Hospital, San Francisco.
She is a recognized expert in the care of newborns and children with
neurological disabilities and director of the Neonatal Brain Disorders
Center at UCSF, funded by the National Institute of Neurological
Diseases and Stroke to study the mechanisms of ischemic, or blood flow,
injury in the neonatal brain.
